Wood Characteristics

Hardness

Janka Rating: 1,320 lbf — Ash offers exceptional hardness and durability, making it ideal for heavy-use applications like flooring, furniture, and tool handles. Its high resistance to impact and wear ensures long-lasting performance.

Color/Appearance

Ash displays a light brown to medium brown heartwood with a distinct contrast to the pale cream to light tan sapwood. The grain is typically straight with a fine to medium texture, often featuring subtle interlocking patterns. Quartersawn Ash reveals stunning ray flecks and a distinctive figure, adding visual interest. The wood has a natural luster that enhances its aesthetic appeal when finished.

Workability

Ash machines well with both hand and power tools, though its interlocked grain can cause some tear-out during cutting. It glues and finishes smoothly, but may require slower feed rates to minimize surface roughness. Staining is moderate; a pre-stain conditioner is recommended for uniform color. Note that Ash can dull cutting tools faster than softer woods, so regular tool maintenance is advised. It responds well to sanding and accepts a variety of finishes with excellent results.

Common Uses

Ash is commonly used for furniture, cabinetry, flooring, millwork, and musical instruments. Its strength and shock resistance make it ideal for baseball bats, tool handles, and sports equipment. It is also popular for high-end furniture, cabinetry, and interior trim due to its beautiful grain and durability.
