Hickory is renowned for its extraordinary hardness, with a Janka rating of 1,820 lbf. This makes it one of the hardest domestic woods available, providing excellent resistance to wear and impact. Its toughness is ideal for applications requiring high strength.
Hickory lumber features a warm, light to medium brown color with darker streaks and a distinctive, often interlocked grain pattern. The wood’s natural beauty is enhanced by its coarse texture and occasional red or purple hues, giving each piece a unique character.
Hickory is relatively easy to machine with sharp tools but can be challenging due to its hardness and interlocking grain, which may cause tear-out. It glues well and finishes smoothly with proper sanding. However, pre-drilling is recommended for screws to prevent splitting.
