Janka Rating: 840 lbf — Alder is a soft hardwood that is easy to work with, but it is less resistant to dents and scratches compared to harder species. This makes it suitable for interior applications and projects where extreme durability is not required.
Knotty Alder features heartwood that ranges from a pale yellow to a warm reddish-brown, while the sapwood is typically a very light cream or off-white. The wood has a straight to slightly interlocked grain pattern, often highlighted by the presence of knots which are a defining characteristic of this species. The knots vary in size and can create interesting visual contrasts, adding to the wood’s rustic appeal. The overall appearance is clean and light, making it a versatile choice for both stained and painted finishes.
Alder machines exceptionally well with both hand and power tools, though care should be taken to prevent tear-out, especially around knots and when using sharp tools. It glues readily with standard woodworking adhesives and sands smoothly, though the soft wood may require a light touch to avoid surface damage. Staining can be inconsistent due to the varying density of the wood and knots; applying a pre-stain conditioner is recommended to achieve a uniform color. This wood accepts finishes well, making it ideal for a variety of surface treatments.
Common uses for Knotty Alder include furniture making, particularly for rustic or country-style designs; cabinetry where a natural or painted finish is desired; interior millwork such as trim and moldings; and flooring in low-traffic areas. It is also popular for boat building, musical instruments, and decorative woodworking projects due to its workability and aesthetic appeal.
